When we made the big decision to launch The Pilgrims Rest as a wedding venue last year, we wanted to offer a beautiful building designed in a way that makes life as easy as possible for couples on their wedding day. We thought about what we would want; not just an empty venue that needed a huge amount of time and effort to bring to life, but rather one that needed little extra decoration, if any.
So, we created The Bryant Rooms - a suite of bridal changing rooms furnished with vintage dressing tables and glass pots with safety pins, a chaise longue for the bridesmaids and a large mirror. There is powder room next door for the bride with enough space to fit a wedding dress and a little kitchen with tea and coffee, a bottle of bubbly and glasses . We re-upholstered our “throne” chairs for the panelled drawing room and dressed the window seat with cushions to make the whole place feel like a home; two little regency bridesmaid chairs are perfect for little legs to sit on for photographs. The Great Hall comes with beautiful Chivari chairs and a ceremony table. We added pea lights over the inglenooks, plenty of wood and safety candles for the ceremony. In The Dining Room we carefully sourced trestle tables that are wide enough for sharing platters, lime washed benches and furs to go on them. We put together a selection of pewter candlesticks and provide candles to go in them. We have scoured antique shops for vintage wine decanters and also have champagne buckets and stands. Off The Great Hall you will find The Webster Bar. Complete with rustic bar, drinks fridge, little tables and chairs as well as a long haberdasher’s cupboard for wedding presents. You can choose to serve your own drinks here or have a cash bar if you prefer. The open inglenook fireplace is decorated with hops and pea lights with its original Webster fireback. As the evenings draw in, stoke up the fires, light the candles and watch as The Pilgrims Rest sparkles into life. During the warmer months and those occasional Indian summers, the cottage garden and walled garden of The Pilgrims Rest are full of plants and flowers and we provide pretty French tables and chairs during the day. With backdrops of sandstone and ancient brick walls clad with ivy and The Abbey itself, there are plenty of stunning places for wedding photographs. This year we are building an Aladdin’s Cave of little extras that you are more than welcome to use from old books and vintage bottles to wicker hearts and lanterns. This collection will keep growing as, and when, we spot things we love and can add to this beautiful old building. The Pilgrims Rest is a unique, exclusive use, wedding venue right in the heart of East Sussex. With lots of added extras and no corkage charges, we provide flexibility and choice. We have designed a venue that makes your day easier so that you can really enjoy your day. We have built you a wedding nest - designed to help your wedding fly! However, we have discovered that it is linked in more ways than we realised. About six hundred years ago at a time when The Pilgrims Rest was being built by hand out of local oak and sandstone, the very first Valentine’s message was being penned. A more recent discovery comes from Slovenia. Saint Valentine was known in Slovenia as one of the saints of Spring; the saint of good health, the patron of beekeepers and, most importantly (to us), the patron saint of “pilgrims”. So, with our ties to Saint Valentine here and overseas, what better place to have your wedding than The Pilgrims Rest? A truly magical and romantic wedding venue in more ways than one, The Pilgrims Rest offers you the flexibility and choice to make your wedding day your own. With no corkage charges and no hidden extras, The Pilgrims Rest really is the perfect place to say “Yes”. From all of us at The Pilgrims Rest we would like to wish you a very happy Valentine’s day!
