I have a photograph of my three children jumping in a huge puddle when they were all very small. It is a particular favourite. As a child, my mother would send us outside for plenty of fresh air whether it was sunny or torrential rain, so, following her example, I would wrap my little ones up in wellies and mackintoshes and religiously head off to the park. More often than not, we would be the only people there. We must have looked an odd site, running around in a downpour when the most of north London were nice and dry inside their homes. Odd maybe, but what fun we had!
Rain gave us puddles to splash around in; an empty park to play in but, more importantly, the big slide entirely to ourselves. Rain and the big slide was a perfect, albeit a slightly dangerous combination; the children would shoot down like mini torpedos squealing with laughter and I would try to catch them as they shot off the bottom. After a few hours, we would arrive home with bright red cheeks and hop in a hot bath.
The same principal of finding the fun in any weather and embracing it is especially true on your wedding day. I am not suggesting that standing in the rain for hours in a wedding dress is necessarily a good idea but also don’t let the thought of potential weather spoil your day. Fog and rain make very atmospheric photographs and some of the best wedding photos are taken when the weather turns. Just make sure you choose a venue that works no matter what the weather throws at you (ideally one with roaring fires where you can warm up when you return to the party).
The Pilgrims Rest is just such a venue. With three inglenook fireplaces and flickering candles; pretty rose and walled gardens, The Pilgrims Rest is a truly magical venue, full of rustic charm and historic soul - perfect for weddings at any time of year, come rain or shine. We have hosted weddings on sunny days, rainy days and foggy days and the weather has never ruined a wedding.
Here is a photograph of Catherine embracing the weather on her big day. We have heard some of our couples (literally) singing in the rain.…As Gene Kelly famously sang - “I’m laughin’ at clouds, so dark up above. The sun’s in my heart and I’m ready for love”. And ready for love they were.

The length of an engagement can vary hugely. There are those who plan their wedding day two years in advance and those who opt for just two months - whatever you choose, time is no barrier for a fabulous wedding.
At The Pilgrims Rest we have bookings for 2021 and even 2022. We also have last minute bookings which happen for a variety of reasons. Some couples are moving abroad and want to start their new lives married, others have been together for years and suddenly decide to “Go for it” and are married within a few months. Our very first wedding at The Pilgrims Rest was unexpectedly brought forward an entire year - this amazing couple managed to plan and execute their wedding beautifully in less than a month.
We have designed The Pilgrims Rest to make a wedding a realistic possibility for anyone wanting to tie the knot in a short time period. With no restrictions on suppliers and no corkage charges we aim to offer as much flexibility and choice as possible to make your wedding day a reality.
The Pilgrims Rest is a truly unique wedding venue in the heart of East Sussex. You won’t need to pay for a venue dresser here. In fact, many couples end up bringing almost nothing at all. Not only a stunning 600 year old venue with a vaulted Great Hall and three working inglenook fireplaces, but one that has been thoughtfully designed and furnished. Full of rustic charm and historic soul The Pilgrims Rest is a wedding venue unlike any other. The team at The Pilgrims Rest create beautiful seasonal looks and continually source decorative accessories that couples can use at no extra charge but can also be packed away if not required. The cosy, intimate nature of the venue means that you can surround yourselves with your friends and family, making this Wealden hall house your own for the day.

With bulbs starting to poke their way through the earth and the morning song of birds now returned to our shores, our design team at The Pilgrims Rest have been building a nest of their own, busily creating a new look for Spring. Like Snow White and her feathered help, we too have been hard at work sprinkling even more magic onto our already magical wedding venue - albeit a little less tuneful in the singing department!
At The Pilgrims Rest we all love creating our seasonal looks. Each season we add something new making the building sing for each season. The looks vary from season to season but all have the same aim - to make having a wedding at The Pilgrims Rest as beautiful and cost effective as possible.
Our Spring look includes cherry blossom and hazel twigs suspended from the Dining Room ceiling intertwined with moss filled tea light lanterns. The furs on the benches in The Great Hall have been swapped for pretty bohemian rugs in faded blues and blush pinks (you can still have the furs if you prefer) and the stair and fireplace garlands have been spruced up with blossom and pussy willow. To top it off we have been painting lanterns in chalky blues and filled them with dried moss and candles tying in perfectly with the rugs.
As well as everything we already provide from The Bryant dressing rooms and the new Fitzherbert dressing room to the cosy Webster bar, the Spring look in the Great Hall and the Dining Room adds a stunning, fresh take on our gorgeous venue.
If you prefer to decorate the venue yourselves then we can also pack everything away and let you do your own thing. Whatever you choose, The Pilgrims Rest is a wedding venue unlike any other. 600 years old, full of rustic charm and historic soul, The Pilgrims Rest offers couples the flexibility to have their wedding just how they want it. There are no corkage charges, no fixed suppliers and no hidden extras. To arrange to view this little gem for yourselves please call….

We all love wedding photographs which is why finding a great photographer is a must for many couples. The right photographer will capture emotion, joy and fun on your wedding day so it is a good investment but can also be an expensive one. What can really push up the price is the need for two photographers shooting at two different locations for the pre-wedding photographs.
If your budget cannot run to a second shooter only one part of the morning is recorded. What often happens is that while a bride or groom is getting ready, their future spouse has no one taking professional photographs of them; no one to capture their pre-wedding nerves, their families looking so proud; their best man or bridesmaid straightening their tie or fluffing their dress.
Some venues have dressing rooms but rarely two. Wanting to get ready together but still keep the element of surprise as your walk down the aisle is something many couples are looking for; this is often difficult to find.
At The Pilgrims Rest we are always looking to help couples have a wonderful day and keep their costs down. So with this in mind, we have been working hard to create a second dressing room for grooms and brides; all under one roof but still quite separate. We have designed our new room to be the perfect backdrop for pre-wedding photos. Rich, cosy and quintessentially British, we absolutely love it and so do photographers.
But what to call our new dressing room? The bar and our original dressing room are named after families who once lived at The Pilgrims Rest but not this time. Instead we have called it The Fitzherbert Room for all the Mr Darcys and Bridget Joneses out there looking to tie the knot. And let’s face it, who can’t say it without thinking of that famous scene from the film and still keep a straight face?
The Pilgrims Rest is nearly 600 years old. Full of rustic charm and historic soul, this is a venue quite unlike any other. To book an appointment to meet a member of our wedding team and see what else we include please contact Amy on 07552873448 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
